The Meir Amit Intelligence Centerin Tel Aviv reporting on the Syria war emphasizes two points often overlooked in U.S. media.
- As the nations involved in the fighting try to wind down the war, the United States is not a party to the peace talks. This is a sign of a militarized U.S. policy with Pentagon, Special Forces and CIA playing a more significant role than the eviscerated State Department.
- Iran is consolidating relations with Syria while saying it will leave if asked. U.S. objects to this presence but it lacks any kind of leverage to obtain its goals, except the threat of war. See point 1.
In early November, the envoy of the Russian president arrived to Tehran and met with the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council to update him regarding the outcome of the summit held by the leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Turkey at the end of October in Istanbul. The special assistant of the Iranian minister of foreign affairs visited Damascus and met with the Syrian president to discuss developments in Syria and deepening of ties between the two countries.
I am not endorsing Israeli policy in Syria, merely pointing out that the Israelis are paying attention on facts on the ground in Syria. Those facts, combined with the Khashoggi debacle, have strengthened Iran’s position since Trump took office.
