The soft sobbing sounds you hear come right-wing media scribes who are crying in their beer. For months, the faithful tribunes of Trumpism have been hyperventilating about the Justice Department’s investigation of the FBI and CIA’s decision to investigate the Trump-Russia contacts in 2016.
On the scarcest of evidence these partisans have hyped the possibilty that prosecutor John Durham would indict former CIA director John Brennan, a harsh critic of President Trump. Exactly how Brennan violated the law by launching an intelligence investigation was never exactly clear. The assumption was that Durham was sure to find something, and Trump would have a campaign cudgel to batter Joe Biden.
It’s time Brennan “answered” for his role in the Trump-Russia investigation, declared the Washington Examiner.
“Reckoning” is on the way, said Howie Carr in the Boston Herald.
Brennan better “lawyer up,” said Sean Hannity.
It would be “SAD” if Durham did not bring criminal charges in the Trump-Russia case before the election, said Sen. Chuck Grassley (R.-Iowa).
“Is Brennan Headed for an indictment?” asked the Daily Caller.
No, he’s not. Brennan lawyered up. He answered the questions, He had his reckoning, and–drum roll please–after an eight-hour interview with Durham, Brennan has been cleared of criminal charges.

During the interview, which took place at CIA headquarters, Brennan was informed by Durham that he was “not a subject or a target” of a criminal investigation, and was being questioned as a “witness to events that are under review,” Nick Shapiro, who previously served as Brennan’s senior adviser, said.
“Brennan welcomed the opportunity to answer Mr. Durham’s questions related to a wide range of intelligence-related activities undertaken by CIA before the November 2016 presidential election as well as the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) published in early January 2017,” Shapiro said. “Brennan provided details on the efforts made by the Intelligence Community to understand and disrupt the actions taken by Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.”
The high hopes of the Trumpian right have been cruelly dashed–by reality.
Right-wing media outlets talked themselves into believing Durham would serve up campaign red-meat in the form of an indictment of Obama’s CIA director. Durham just didn’t have the evidence to deliver. Those who sought to see Brennan in the dock must now acknowledge that Brennan has been cleared. By Bill Barr’s Justice Department! Their feelings are hurt.
