Spies Urge CIA Director Gina Haspel to Protect Whistleblower from Trump

From the Washington Examiner.

“It will be incumbent on her to protect the whistleblower — and by extension, the organization — moving forward,” said Marc Polymeropoulos, a senior CIA operations officer who recently retired. “This is a seminal moment for her leadership, and I’m confident she will do the right thing.”

  1. There are three distinct reasons to protect the whistleblower.
    1. There is no reason to expose him since at least 95% of what he implied has been corroborated and even amplified by identified witnesses with first-hand knowledge.
    2. The only effect of exposing him would be to discourage other would-be witnesses to come forward.
    3. The logic behind whistleblower protection is the same as the one permitting journalists not to reveal their confidential sources: to keep open channels through which useful but unpopular or hidden information about misdeeds can come out in public view.
Any one of the three is sufficient to make whistleblower anonymity necessary even against the wishes and accusations of President Trump and his defenders.
