In my recent National Memo piece on Trump vs. the CIA, I observed the CIA used to have Republican allies on Capitol Hill. No more. Exhibit A: Senator Ron Johnson, Republican of Wisconsin.
The heated exchange between Johnson and NBC’s Chuck Todd suggests the uncharted and hazardous waters in which the agency now sails. A Republican senator the president praises as “highly respected” has no respect for the CIA. Once a bulwark of the $15 billion a year agency, the GOP is no longer reliable source of support.
Mobilizing his troops against the agency, Trump immediately blessed Johnson’s attitude, without mentioning the CIA by name.
