Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps was behind recent attacks in the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, said Mossad chief Yossi Cohen in a speech Monday, citing “best sources of Israeli and Western intelligence agencies.”
Last week the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates disputed U.S. charges that Iran was behind the attacks, saying his country had “no evidence” about who was responsible for attacks in its territorial waters that crippled four ships in the recent weeks.
Cohen charged that attacks on oil tankers, Saudi airports and sites in Baghdad – were approved by Iran’s leadership and most were carried out by the Revolutionary Guard and its proxies. Cohen
“Through these attacks,” said Cohen, “Iran is trying to tell the world it is not afraid of an escalation, and that if sanctions are not removed or eased it will cause serious harm to the global oil market.”
Cohen also suggested that Israel’s intelligence service will lead the country’s effort to forge a comprehensive peace agreement with Arab countries.
“The Mossad sees a rare opportunity to reach a regional understanding that would lead to a comprehensive peace agreement. Common interests as well as a fight against common adversaries create – perhaps a one-time – window of opportunity. It’s the Mossad’s role to lead this effort.”
