Over the weekend, President Trump became the first sitting U.S. President to set foot in North Korea, after he stepped over the border during a summit at the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between North and South Korea. You Can read more about the summit and border crossing here.
Thumbs Up
Donald Trump’s foreign policy is haphazard, ill-intentioned, and often malicious. But we should applaud him when he does the right thing. His steps toward rapprochement with North Korea are good, and he should go further by brokering a formal end to the Korean War.

Anything that improves the political climate on the Korean peninsula and engages North Korea on its nuclear program is a good thing.

Thumbs Down
This President should take the North Korean nuclear threat and its crimes against humanity seriously. This is not a photo-op. Our security and our values are at stake.
— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) June 30, 2019
Our President shouldn’t be squandering American influence on photo ops and exchanging love letters with a ruthless dictator. Instead, we should be dealing with North Korea through principled diplomacy that promotes US security, defends our allies, and upholds human rights. https://t.co/9ROpNfjYbY

Amy Klobuchar
"It's not as easy as just going, and… bringing a hot dish over the fence to the dictator next door. This is a ruthless dictator."

Trump yet again met with Kim Jong-un without getting a deal on North Korea's nuclear weapons.

If we remove the sanctions on North Korea & legitimize their nuclear arsenal, Trump will be turning his back on our allies and making the world more dangerous. https://t.co/UKzr7EOpAW
John Hickenlooper
“These are the highest stakes imaginable. Nuclear weapons, nuclear proliferation. And they shouldn’t be negotiated by tweet. In Colorado, we refer to this sometimes as behaving like a cowboy. Although, in this case, I think both of them, it’s all hat & no cattle.” @Hickenlooper pic.twitter.com/rsbRz7P0wy

Joe Biden
And even as Trump has rushed to legitimize a dictator in North Korea with dozens of nuclear weapons, he trashed the Iran nuclear deal — a deal that was working to keep Iran far away from a single nuclear bomb.
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) July 1, 2019
Diplomacy is important, but diplomacy requires a strategy, a process, and competent leadership to deliver. After three made-for-TV summits, we still don't have a single concrete commitment from North Korea.
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) July 1, 2019
Yet again, Donald Trump has demonstrated that he is more concerned with a photo op for himself than getting results for the American people. He has repeatedly elevated Kim Jong Un — a murderous tyrant — on the international stage in exchange for almost nothing.
