Watching UFOs, DIA Studied How to Get Invisible

Intelligence agencies are known for asking seemingly crazy questions like: “How do you make something disappear?”

In March 2010, the Defense Intelligence Agency published a paper attempting to answer that question. It was called “Invisibility Cloaking: Theory and Experiments.” It was prepared for the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program. (AATIP) These are the people who study unidentified flying objects or UFOs.

The paper was first obtained by a Las Vegas TV station and has now been posted by Public Intelligence, a quality online archive well worth visiting.

Invisibility, the research concludes, is not impossible.

Invisibility may be achieved through three principal methods: camouflage, transparency, and cloaking. Many animals and some plants use camouflage to disguise themselves from predators-for example, by assuming the shapes and colors of objects in their surroundings. The military has long used forms of camouflage; a recent military application of camouflage is stealth technology.
