Once again the Iranian intelligence services have demonstrated the ability to penetrate U.S. intelligence.
A federal grand jury in the District of Columbia has indicted Monica Witt, a former U.S. Air Force counterintelligence officer, for espionage on behalf of the Government of Iran. Four Iranians were also charged with acting on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to attempt malign computer intrusions and aggravated identity theft targeting members of the U.S. intelligence community.
Reuters:
Witt, 39, was recruited for the operation after attending two conferences in Iran organized by New Horizon, which supported efforts by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force to recruit and collect intelligence from foreign attendees, the officials said.
Iran’s intelligence agencies have been at war with the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies for 40 years. Last November, Yahoo News reported that Iranian intelligence had penetrated a CIA recruiting operation with catastrophic results.
