With the Trump administration pursuing “regime change” operations in Venezuela and Iran, understanding the nature and history of such operations is essential.

One common denominator, from Cuba in the early 1960s to Iraq in 2002, is creating front groups of exiles to create the appearance of legitimacy.

In the excellent LobeLog, Muhammad Sahimi, a professor at the University of Southern California, dissects the Iranian front groups supported by the United States, ranging from monarchist to terrorist to “liberal.”

Sahimi makes this key point.

One of the most important aspects of all such groups is that they have no significant social base of support within Iran. Even in the diaspora a large majority of Iranians, while opposing the clerics in Iran, reject economic sanctions, military threats, and these groups’ support for the anti-Iranian policy of the Trump-MbS-Netanyahu triangle.
