I paused over describing Rep. Eliot Engel, the new chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee as “pro-war.”

Was it fair. As I studied his record, I realized the epithet was not inaccurate, indeed. “pro-war” captures something essential about Engle’s policy positions.

Engel not only favored launching the most disastrously failed war in American history–Iraq 2003. He also has supported Israel’s pre-emptive wars against much, much weaker foes.

In other words, Engel not only favored the Iraq war but has voiced support for war in diverse situations, which, to me, merits the label “pro-war.

The Nation has it right:

has a long track record as one of the most hawkish members of the Democratic caucus. He enthusiastically supported the invasion of Iraq, opposed the Iranian nuclear deal, and uncritically backs Israeli belligerence at every turn.
